Flipped Learning

SALT’s latest CPD offering is centred around the Flipped Classroom approach.  Flipped Classroom, Flipping the Classroom and Flipped Learning are all terms used to describe the concept, and each term is interchangeable.

“The flipped classroom describes a reversal of traditional teaching where students gain first exposure to new material outside of class, usually via reading or lecture videos, and then class time is used to do the harder work of assimilating that knowledge through strategies such as problem-solving, discussion or debates.”

(Vanderbilt University, Center for Teaching)

The Flipped Classroom CPD module looks at the theory behind the Flipped Classroom, the advantages of flipping, and looks at some of the tools you can use to create resources that will help you to flip.  It could be something as simple as a PDF document or a Powerpoint presentation, or it could be as sophisticated as creating your own videos or interactive resources.  The focus will be on utilising tools that are either available on the university network, or freely available on the internet.

If you would like to explore the techniques that could be used to flip your classroom, we have devised a self-paced module within Canvas.  It will contain guidance in the form of creating the materials, inclusivity considerations and, where possible, case studies from Swansea University academics on how they have used some of the techniques.
